COMEN 2011

Comen Cup

Busto Arsizo  - 4th-8thAug

Busto Arsizo

GBR swam (figures aside) only the Team Free and ranked 13th. The team included Jade Hearmon, Lucy Farrell and captain Natalie Saudan.

The ASA England squad certainly had a busy start to their summer holidays with a two-week camp at the HPC followed by the Comen Cup in Italy.
All 12 athletes were back ready for selection and the top 10 were picked in the first two days of the camp. The camp also included choreography changes following the Croatia Cup earlier in the year, when they came home with a bronze medal. The Comen Cup was a big step up and they all knew that, with the added complication of qualification due to Comen countries getting guaranteed spots in the final, it wasn't going to be easy. They were invited to the One Year to Go event at the London Aquatics Centre. All 12 athletes travelled straight from training to the Olympic venue where they trained in the warm-up pool and then performed in front of the 1,500 people in the audience before the BBC programme went live. The athletes had to keep their cool and focus while sharing a room with loads of ex-Olympians, Tom Daley, Eddie Izzard and other celebrities. It was a great test and opportunity for our stars of the future. In Italy the athletes showed their improvements. The average figure score was three marks higher than the previous year with the top athletes scoring 66 and the 10th athlete 60. When you think that the 13-14yrs figures in 2011 was won with a score of 60, it shows great improvement. The team was technically harder, had a faster pace around the pool and demanded more concentration with faster moves. Some of the judges commented on how much stronger the team looked and hearing some of the other countries saying the same was encouraging. The team put in a much better performance than Croatia, synchro errors were reduced, highlights were improved and the energy shown throughout the routine was great. Seven of the 12 athletes remain in the 13-14 category again this year so it's looking promising to see an improved standard at this year's nationals, hopefully leading to improved international results next year.

December, Reading Central Pool

Jan Clayton, President:-

"This year we appointed Kate Coupar as Synchro Performance and Development Coach. Kate has been involved with the club for many years as a swimmer and a coach and chief choreographer. It is exciting to have Kate working full time for the club. Of course I must thank Di Hughes who jas worked tirelessly for the club as Head Coach for many years.

Jade Hearmon, Lucy Farrell & Natalie Saudan were selected to swim as part of the England Development Squad. They attended the Primorje Cup in Croatia and claimed their first bronze medal.

Hannah Green and Rhiannon Williams competed in the Junior Great Britain Squad during the summer and both swam at the Junior European Championships.

Katie Skelton and Katie Clark have successfully retrialled and continue to work towards the Olympics next year".
