The British Trials

On May 12th 53 synchronised swimmers from across the country descended upon the High Performance Centre to try out for the first British Senior Team in 7 years and the British Junior Team 2007.

The trials were held in a competition format. 20 athletes entered the senior trials and performed 6 technical team elements in front of two panels of judges. 39 athletes then took the stage to perform 6 jun-ior figures in front of the judges. The new junior head coach, Loredana Montico also flew in from Italy to watch and evaluate the junior swimmers.

Katie Skelton won the Senior Trials and the club's Helen Morris, Jazmine Stansbury and Jenny Godding were selected to compete at the Junior Europeans in July.

Summer Show

Central Pool

There was no Christmas Show in 2007, the club opting for a "Summer Show" instead. Some clickable images below.

Britain competed for the first time in the combination routine and it proved the squad's most successful event. They finished 8th with a score of 80.500. The new pairing of Helen Morris and Asha Randall came 11th in the duet final. Despite being selected to swim the duet only 4 weeks beforehand, they performed strongly to finish with a majority of scores breaking the 8 range. The event was won by Greece for the first time after Russia suffered a one-point penalty for deliberate use of the pool floor during an assisted lift.

" It proved a successful meet for the British team and demonstrated how Britain is moving forward"

Adele Carlsen

"The British Junior Synchro Team competed in 3 finals at the Junior Europeans in Calella, Spain. Britain competed in the 4 routine events after spending just five weeks training together at the National High Performance Centre under Head Junior Coach Loredana Montico and Assistant Coaches Jessica Chase and Kate Coupar.

The team finals took place before a packed crowd with lots of atmosphere. Britain opened the competition, then had to wait for their rivals Germany to take to the pool. Germany had finished just 0.2 marks behind Britain in the team prelim and had the better draw. The British athletes performed a great routine and finished ninth, beating the Germans by 0.3. Russia won the team event closely followed by7 Spain and Greece third

Jazmine Stansbury competed in her first international solo and finished a creditable 14m, just missing out on the finals.

The third Reading Royal swimmer in Calella was Jenny Godding.

Special mention to RR swimmer Holly Gurr who at Nationals was winner of the Gemma Yates Trophy for endeavour.

The trophy is awarded in memory of Gemma, who swam for Walsall SSC. She represented England and had been selected to compete in the Junior Europeans before sadly passing away at the age of 16.

It is awarded to a swimmer who has overcome anything which has made it difficult for them, yet still gives 100 per cent to the sport of synchronised swimming.
